The Horrors of Ultranationalism
Social Studies 20-1
Terrible consequences can result when nationalistic enthusiasm is transformed into ultranationalistic zeal. The case study of the Holocaust in World War Two is one of best known incidences of this transformation.
This two-part project will give students the opportunity to explore some other situations in which nationalism has developed into ultranationalism, resulting in crimes against humanity and genocide. In groups of no more than three, students will become experts on one case study, and submit their research as a group. Next, they will individually submit a written response exploring the connections of ultranationalist ideas to their case.
